Suicide Squad Special Ops

Warner Bros. was seeking to extend the brand of their new blockbuster franchise, Suicide Squad, by creating a mobile-first game to be released alongside the marketing of the film.  WB engaged Talespin and Sticky Studios to execute the mobile game but with virtual reality emerging as a new content medium, the Talespin team saw an opportunity to further extend the gameplay into a first of its kind mobile VR game.  We were responsible for the entire game creation process from concept artwork and game design to development, launch and support. In this official Suicide Squad film game, you have been selected to lead a special task force comprised of highly dangerous incarcerated Super Villains. It is up to you and your Squad of antiheroes to defeat the horde of enemies that try to stop you. Fight as Harley Quinn with her signature baseball bat, or as Deadshot with his rifle or as Diablo with fire.

  • Talespin and Sticky Studios developed the Suicide Squad mobile and VR game for Warner Bros and Legendary Entertainment.
  • The game reached #1 on the Oculus store, surpassing Minecraft.
  • The mobile version of the game has surpassed 14 million downloads
  • To build a fan community, players compete against each other in a daily, weekly and all-time leader boards.
  • Players also can record HD gameplay footage and share it on social media

We chose a first-person shooter to allow players to experience the special abilities and weaponry of the most prominent characters in Suicide Squad. By going for a fast paced intense shooter experience, we were able to appeal to the right audience for the film. By incorporating real-time HD video recording into the gameplay experience, we were able to stimulate social video sharing and build another channel for Warner Bros to help engage their fan community. In order to reach the widest audience possible the game was simultaneously released on iOS, Android, AppleTV, Desktop and as a Mobile VR game.

As if often the case on large and complex blockbuster projects, the mobile marketing game had a tight timeline in order to get the game in market leading up to the release of the film.  When such timelines are put in front of our team, we are able to leverage existing engines, frameworks, and animation libraries to deliver a much higher quality game and experience than would otherwise be possible with another studio.  After ten years of creating similar titles, the Talespin team has a world class team to execute high level creative on limited timelines.

Suicide Squad outperformed Minecraft on the Oculus Store and successfully had over 14m downloads with 4.6 stars rating on US app store.  Warner Bros has been extremely happy with the results of the game.  Because of the stellar reviews on the mobile VR game, Talespin’s team has been approached on future projects with Samsung, WB, and other large content studios.
